Tecolote Shores South Playground represents a new benchmark for inclusive play and accessibility within the City of San Diego’s park system. Designed to be the most universally accessible playground in the region, it draws inspiration from the natural forms of the adjacent Mission Bay. Cove-like play zones encircle a central “island”, a gently sloping, planted play mound provides fully accessible pathways to the highest points of the playground structures.
Every element of the playground reflects principles of universal design, supporting a wide range of physical, sensory, neurocognitive, and mental health needs. Children of all abilities can play together through features like a wheelchair-accessible carousel, inclusive swings, rockers, towers, and a zipline. Quiet nooks and sensory-rich elements—including a sound garden—offer calming and engaging spaces.
Created in collaboration with the City’s Therapeutic Recreation Services, the project includes graphic communication panels to support non-verbal users, establishing a new accessibility standard for San Diego parks.
This collaboration and intentionality have made Tecolote Shores South Playground a model for future parks and playgrounds. Since its opening, it has quickly become a vibrant community hub—welcoming children and families of all abilities in a setting that fosters joy, inclusivity, and connection every day.
