San Diego Civic Theatre Refresh

As a cornerstone of San Diego’s civic and cultural identity, the Civic Theatre Refresh reimagined one of the region’s most important public gathering spaces, honoring its legacy while creating a vibrant destination for future generations. The renovation transformed the entrance lobby and public areas into a more welcoming and functional environment, enhancing the patron experience through improved circulation, expanded concession capacity, and comprehensive interior upgrades.
Inspired by San Diego’s coastal landscape, the design replaced the theater’s long-standing red and gold palette with materials and colors reflective of the region’s natural beauty. While key signature design elements were kept intact, new terrazzo flooring, custom carpeting, and stone finishes evoke the ocean, bluffs and tidepools, creating a strong sense of place. Custom beaded chandeliers, hand-embellished by a local artist, serve as a signature feature within the renovated interiors. Redesigned concessions, upgraded restrooms, artisanal tiles, new murals, enhanced lighting, and a VIP lounge further elevate the visitor experience.
Through thoughtful design and investment, this transformation revitalizes a 60-year-old civic landmark, strengthens downtown San Diego’s cultural core, and ensures the Civic Theatre remains a premier venue for world-class performances and community gathering for decades to come.
