Riviera Del Sol Park transformed a previously undeveloped lot in Otay Mesa into a lively community destination. The design theme was inspired by Riviera, or “a coastline or strip of land by the water,” as well as the sun. This Mediterranean theme is embodied by the park design with flowing natural forms, a warm, earthy color palette, and island and sun references. The park offers a variety of active spaces, including an exploratory boulder garden, sports courts, fitness areas, and a central playground, surrounded by flexible turf “islands” for relaxation and play. The Mediterranean, native, and low-water plant palette includes over 130 trees for shade and accent. A highlight of the park is its large, interactive sundial. Visitors are invited to use their own shadow to tell the time, making the experience both playful and uniquely connected to the sun. Riviera Del Sol Park now serves as a vibrant gathering place for the Otay Mesa community, blending recreation, relaxation, and a strong sense of place, all inspired by the warmth and spirit of San Diego’s Mediterranean environment.
