REVERIE is a brand new, one-of-a-kind hospitality showroom by bkm, founded on the principles of experiential design. Our project involved the transformation of a previously undesirable space, which had lingered on the market unoccupied for many years. The 4,800-square-foot area presented a significant design challenge. Half of the space featured a gloomy drop ceiling, creating a depressing and stifling atmosphere, while the other half featured a ceiling height of 23 feet with copious amounts of natural light. With such limited square footage, it was important that the contrasting sides of the space were equally activated and compelling to users.

In addition, recognizing the challenges faced by today’s hybrid workers—such as feelings of inequity, isolation, and disconnection from culture and colleagues—we strategically designed the space to overcome these issues. The primary focus was to create a holistic hospitality-driven environment that earns employees’ commutes and contributes to better work.

Our overarching design concept revolved around the juxtaposition of light/celestial and dark/moody themes. Natural light and biophilic elements on the light side enhance focus and foster a positive work environment. Simultaneously, the dark/moody side transforms into an inviting, warm social hub conducive to hospitality. Art, accessories, rugs, ambient lighting, and greenery were thoughtfully incorporated on both sides to enrich the spatial experience. Recognizing the importance of enticing employees back to the office, we prioritized creating a sense of belonging and engagement. Every detail, including curated music, a custom scent, and hospitality wares, was integrated to provide a holistic sensory experience.

We recognize that a one-size-fits-all approach doesn’t suffice in today’s workplace. Our team strategically designed various settings within the limited square footage to support the five distinct work modes: focus, social, collaborative, task, and rejuvenation. These spaces include a multi-functional respite room, focus neighborhood, hybrid-enabled living rooms, drop-in collaborative teaming rooms, and a robust hospitality-inspired kitchen. These options allow users the flexibility to choose and control their preferred work environment.

Technology integration played a pivotal role in ensuring a high-performing workspace that promotes equity and inclusion. Formal settings and informal spaces alike were equipped with intuitive technology, encouraging immediate connections with remote participants and enhancing adaptability to different work modes for increased productivity and well-being.

REVERIE stands out in the market due to its innovative approach, foreseeing and adapting to future ways of working and thinking. Beyond a mere physical transformation, our design represents a thoughtful response to the evolving needs of the workforce. It transcends aesthetics to foster a sense of equity, inclusion, and connection, making it not just a workspace but a solution tailored to the demands of the contemporary professional landscape.
