The renovation of this former house demonstrates how an architectural intervention can transform an existing building into a successful commercial space without losing its original character. Rather than competing with its surroundings, the project embraces the mature vegetation as its defining feature, making it an essential part of the restaurant experience. The existing trees provide natural shade, improve thermal comfort, and create a unique atmosphere that would be difficult to achieve in a new development.
By preserving the original structure, the project minimizes its environmental impact, makes efficient use of existing resources, and highlights the value of the building’s original architecture. Elements such as the terracotta breeze blocks and the restrained material palette complement the landscape, allowing the vegetation to remain the visual focal point. The result is a space that blends naturally into its urban context, showing how adaptive reuse can breathe new life into an existing property while creating a place with a stronger sense of identity than a complete replacement.

Located in one of Tijuana’s trendiest neighborhoods, Bastardo blends modern architecture with a sense of nostalgia. Bright colors and contemporary design are balanced by warm wooden floors, communal tables, lush plants, and vinyl records. The architecture is warm rather than intimidating, evoking the apartment everyone dreamed of having in college—the one where friends gathered late into the night, music was always playing, iconic photographs and carefully curated décorI. It’s a place where thoughtful design creates an atmosphere that’s both vibrant and effortlessly welcoming.

Having been to this space many times I can confirm the renovation is amazing! The open space, brick and vegetation give it a welcoming and warm feeling it didn’t have before. It’s a place where I’ve laughed a lot and shared moments with friends and I think the space lends itself exactly for that.

una terraza todo rescatado al urbanizmo no planeado entre cerros, rios, mar y frontera de Tijuana. Una oportunidad para vivir una ciudad tan vibrante todos reunidos en una esquina donde se une un bar un café un pádel y una sociedad que reclama su ciudad un lugar donde VIVIR.

As most if not all people involved here know, Tijuana’s restaurant scene has become incredibly competitive in recent years and this place has stood out not only for its great food and drinks but definitely because of its thoughtful design and identity. It’s a great neighborhood spot with an outdoor patio not far from the border. Check it out if you haven’t yet!
The best place ever! So well thought out, the ambiance is amazing, and there is so much attention to detail. This place is so inviting, makes you feel at ease. Would come here just for the ambiance and the design of the restaurant!

Es el mejor lugar del planeta tierra, buena convivencia con quien sea que vayas, los meseros son otro rollo, la smash burger es mágica y pfff la cheve ni se diga! Es un lugar de alta cultura ya.
