The new Pepper Canyon West Living and Learning Neighborhood is UC San Diego’s first upper-division student housing project and marks a new high density, urban gateway to the campus. Located on the site of the existing Sixth College Residences, the project consists of two asymmetric residential buildings that rise from the canyon park and culminate in 22- and 23-story towers. These two ascending spirals—connecting the canyon to the sky—contain stepped terrace forms that stack upwards and introduce lounges and sky terraces with each ascending plan turn. Inspired by the local trees that inhabit the canyon edge, the facade features glazing strips that alternate in pattern bound with metal panel striations and perforated metal sunshades that peel away from the surface, creating a dappled texture on the building.
