Oceanside Odyssey transforms a previously gray pedestrian tunnel into an immersive and welcoming passage through the Oceanside Transit Center. Extending across 18 walls and more than 5,000 square feet, the mural carries pedestrians from sunset skies into the ocean’s depths through vibrant depictions of local marine, avian and terrestrial life.
The animals reflect Oceanside’s natural environment while symbolizing the variety of people who live in, travel through and contribute to the community. Large “Oceanside” and “California” lettering creates a distinctive sense of arrival at a regional transit hub connecting local bus and rail service with COASTER, SPRINTER, Amtrak and Metrolink.
More than 3,500 community members and visitors participated in selecting the winning concept. The project also paired public art with improved lighting and other safety features, enhancing both the character and everyday function of the tunnel. Through its scale, craftsmanship and community-centered development, Oceanside Odyssey turns an essential passageway into a memorable civic space that welcomes residents, commuters and visitors while expressing pride in Oceanside’s identity.
