The Municipal Flagship Store is a project that redefines what a community-centered retail interior can be in the evolving town of Oceanside. Housed in a thoughtfully restored building along South Coast Highway, the 16,300-square-foot space is more than a store; it’s a fully immersive lifestyle environment. At its core, the 6,000-square-foot retail floor blends seamlessly with a café, barbershop, creative studio, and office space to deliver a layered interior that supports the brand’s ethos and encourages community bonding through unique social interactions.
Design That Embodies Place & Purpose
The interiors speak directly to the Municipal brand (rooted in performance, authenticity, and connection) while honoring the building’s history and the character of Oceanside. Exposed materials, warm lighting, and a clean, textural palette create a backdrop that feels both elevated and inviting. Each space within the flagship was intentionally designed to support social interaction, personal moments, and community building.
A Holistic Interior Experience
This flagship exemplifies placemaking through interior design. It invites movement and exploration while offering distinct zones for gathering, relaxing, or engaging with the brand. The office space is connected to the retail floor, which flows seamlessly into the back-of-house creative studio, including a large photo studio. From the approachable barbershop chair to shared workspaces, every detail reinforces a sense of inclusion, creativity, and civic pride.
Craft, Community & Sustainability
The project celebrates craft through both materiality and detailing, with conscious selections that emphasize durability and support the local economy. Adding the barbershop and coffee shop allows more local craftspeople to practice their trades on a larger platform (with the Mark Wahlberg brand). These interior spaces directly contribute to the San Diego–Tijuana design ecosystem. They are built for the community, not just located in it.
Why It Matters Now
At a time when social interaction among American adults is rapidly declining, this space fosters in-person connection across a variety of environments. The Municipal Flagship sets a new precedent for how commercial design can also be civic, cultural, and deeply human. Municipal’s interior isn’t just beautifully designed, it’s purpose-built to support a thriving, active, and connected community.
