Lucien is a 30-seat restaurant in La Jolla that uses restraint, texture, and materiality to create a warm and intimate dining experience. The design draws directly from the surrounding coastal landscape, with soft tones at the bar reflecting the beaches of La Jolla and interior materials inspired by the caves and rock formations found along the coastline.
Guided by principles of Wabi-Sabi and juxtaposition, the space balances raw California wood and stone with refined detailing, creating an environment that feels natural, calm, and understated. Views into the kitchen strengthen the connection between the dining experience and the craft behind the food, while the warm palette and layered textures create a space that feels welcoming and grounded.
Rather than relying on excess, the project focuses on atmosphere and a strong sense of place. The result is a hospitality space that feels personal, refined, and closely tied to its coastal setting.
