Gaslamp Quarter – Lack of City Oversight

San Diego’s Gaslamp Quarter, celebrated as the “historic heart” of the city, is a mess! This National Historic Landmark District was carefully nurtured for decades after being established in 1976. In the last 10+ years, the City of San Diego has dodged its responsibility to protect Gaslamp’s storefronts and street walls from flagrant violations like giant plastic signs, crazy color schemes, outdoor big screen TVs, pop-up tents, graffiti murals, and signs covering windows. Everything that makes Gaslamp unique and special is being obliterated. Today, the Gaslamp Quarter looks more like Midway and Rosecrans than a historic district.

For years, the Gaslamp Quarter Historical Foundation, Save Our Heritage Organisation, and AIASD Preservation & Reuse Committee have pleaded with the city to enforce their own ordinances and design guidelines to keep Gaslamp beautiful and protect its history. Building owners and tenants have learned that they can do anything they want in Gaslamp with no repercussions.

Context – The many design violations to building exteriors in Gaslamp has tarnished the look and charm of the district. It looks less like a historic district than a mishmash of trashy, nondescript restaurants and vape shops.
Quality – The historic quality of the Gaslamp Quarter is diminishing week-by-week from ill-designed storefronts, dominated by garish, modern signage and advertising.
Community Impact – The city’s lack of enforcement of their own design guidelines has harmed the Gaslamp, reducing the district to a second-rate mall.

The current Gaslamp Quarter is in a very sad state, as can be seen in the attached photographs. The City of San Diego deserves a smelly bouquet of onions for allowing the “Historic Heart of San Diego” to turn into El Cajon Boulevard south.
