The County of San Diego’s new Public Health Lab is a state-of-the-art, two-story, 52,000-square-foot facility located within the County Operations Center (COC) in Kearny Mesa. Designed to support approximately 90 staff, the lab provides critical public health services, including genome sequencing and testing services for infectious disease, food and water safety, animal rabies, dangerous pathogen, and tuberculosis.
The landscape architectural design for the Public Health Lab features several configurations of outdoor rooms, designed to support varying social settings and activities. Materials and site furnishings, selected in accordance with the COC design guidelines, blend the lab seamlessly into the existing COC campus. The planting selection for the lab builds on the previous design phases of the COC with a focus on native and water-wise species. The hardy, colorful, evergreen, and structural plant selection blends together to form a natural tapestry surrounding the building. The Public Health Lab has achieved LEED-Platinum certification.
