Orchid Talmadge Gateway has “do the right thing” written all over it. It provides 60 brand new studio apartments to at-risk seniors, in addition to onsite counseling and medical care – and it saved a locally significant nightclub to boot. The developer and designer team responded to community preferences for a building that paid homage to the area’s heritage of Art Deco by creating a curvaceous, stream lined building that activates the sidewalk and the skyline.
The new structure includes a new retail lease space begging to become a coffee shop or juice bar. The developer also saved and refreshed the beloved Til Two Club on El Cajon Boulevard… a venue with a past and a new lease on life. This project should be recognized as sensitive infill development that has a heart – for our older neighbors and our threatened local landmarks. Well done!
