Located in Point Loma, San Diego, California, Bermeo transforms an existing detached garage into a fully independent accessory dwelling while extending only modestly into the rear yard. Rather than replacing the existing structure, the project works largely within its original footprint and preserves recognizable architectural motifs, allowing the intervention to remain closely tied to the character of the property and its neighborhood.

Despite its compact size, the dwelling creates a generous spatial experience through careful organization, abundant natural light, cross ventilation, and a double-height living space that opens directly to the garden. The project demonstrates how thoughtful spatial design can expand the perceived quality of space without increasing the building’s physical footprint. As a model for small-scale residential infill, Bermeo illustrates how accessory dwelling units can contribute to housing needs while reinforcing the identity of established neighborhoods.
