Balboa Park Central Gardens Pergola

The reconstruction of the historic Pergola completes phase II of the Botanical Building and Gardens restoration in San Diego’s Balboa Park back to the original 1915 Panama-California Exposition design. Demolished during World War II, the reconstruction of the pergola mimics the original design and incorporates an accessible path, handrails, and sight lighting proudly serving the community for everyone to enjoy. Five bays of classical columns shaded by three layers of redwood lattice provide an ideal spot to sit and rest during a leisurely park stroll and renders a great vantage point for people watching the lily pond and Botanical Building.
Along with 9 outdoor themed gardens, phase II also restored the two circular fountains and the iconic lily pond. The revived pergola sets the backdrop for the west gardens and fountain. This will no doubt prove to be a popular destination for special occasions: quinceanera, prom, and engagement photos, weddings, gala events and more.
The City of San Diego and Forever Balboa Park coordinated major fundraising efforts to bring this pergola back to the public for our enjoyment. Integrated donor etchings in the quarry tile forecourt and site benches are carefully blended with the historical design closely preserving the original 1915 Panama-California Exposition intent.
