The Botanical Building and surrounding gardens have long inspired curiosity, learning, and an appreciation for nature, and this restoration ensures that legacy continues. Through the addition of accessible pathways throughout the stroll garden, interactive QR codes, the restoration of the historic exterior fountains and ornamental urn planters, thoughtfully designed hardscape, and diverse new plantings, visitors are invited to engage with the gardens in new ways. Whether exploring the themed gardens, learning about the landscape through interpretive features, or simply enjoying a leisurely walk, the project creates opportunities for people of all ages and abilities to experience the space more fully.
What makes this project especially deserving of recognition is the partnership between the City of San Diego and Forever Balboa Park (non -profit), who came together and shared a common vision of transforming the exterior gardens into a destination in their own right. Rather than simply restoring the landscape they created a team that desired the same tenacity of focus and vision. They created an inviting public space that complements and enhances the Botanical Building while remaining enjoyable regardless of whether the building is open. Visitors waiting for a tour, strolling through Balboa Park, or passing by for only a few moments are now welcomed by beautiful gardens, restored fountains and ornamental urns, comfortable gathering spaces, and vibrant landscapes that encourage them to pause, explore, and connect with nature.
The project successfully balances historic preservation with accessibility, sustainability, and community enjoyment. New hardscape surrounding the restored fountains provides places to gather and appreciate the gardens, while sustainable irrigation, carefully selected plantings, and enhanced landscapes ensure the space will continue to thrive for generations to come. Rather than simply recreating what once existed, the project enriches the visitor experience by extending the beauty and educational value of the Botanical Building into the surrounding landscape.
To me, that’s what makes this project so successful. It doesn’t just restore a historic landmark, it creates an inclusive and welcoming public garden that can be enjoyed by everyone, whether they’re visiting the Botanical Building, waiting outside, or simply taking a stroll through Balboa Park. It is a wonderful example of how thoughtful landscape design can honor history while creating new opportunities for people to connect with one of San Diego’s most cherished places.
