As part of the pedestrian access upgrade project, MTS has rebuilt a two-block stretch of Kettner in front of the Santa Fe depot as a sea of asphalt and concrete. Rather than take the opportunity to create a welcoming site for visitors arriving at the depot with local plantings, counteracting global warming and the heat island effect, the project is all hard surfaces. One of the project goals is “Activate the area with urban design amenities to create a welcoming human-scale public space that is sensitive to the surrounding built environment and climate.” Unfortunately, they have missed the opportunity to design with our climate.
