Situated within one of UC San Diego’s first public-private partnerships, 8980 Villa La Jolla Drive, completed on May 13, 2024, responds thoughtfully to its unique site constraints and the surrounding community. The building’s shifting volumes and solar-oriented façades are designed to reduce visual impact and frame key community views, while the use of exposed white cast-in-place concrete and board-formed finishes reflects the coastal character of La Jolla. The integration of extensive landscaping and a ground-floor café further connects the facility to its neighborhood, creating a welcoming and accessible environment.
As a flexible, state-of-the-art home for UC San Diego’s Health Sciences and Division of Extended Studies, the project delivers significant value to both the university and the broader community. The building’s design supports collaborative research and educational initiatives, fostering innovation and knowledge-sharing. By overcoming challenging soil conditions and providing additional below-grade parking, the project enhances accessibility and convenience for students, faculty, and visitors. Swinerton’s commitment to sustainable construction and energy efficiency ensures the facility will serve as an ongoing asset to the community.
