SGI, a biotechnology research company who’s mission is to mitigate climate change through low-carbon algal biofuels.
The property was developed in 1989, consisting of tilt-up concrete panels, decorative reveals and black mirrored glass.
As SGI’s lease concluded, Healthpeak knew they would have to invest in substantial upgrades to compete in the aggressive biotech market. The building’s exterior appearance needed to be modernized, infrastructure systems upgraded, and the interior refreshed.
MA were brought on to lead the design of the building while respecting and maintaining most of the existing structural elements. The design complements the adjacent building on site so the separate properties could be viewed as a single campus.
The new facility had to represent Healthpeak’s values, culture, and entrepreneurial spirit, but also represent SGI’s absolute commitment to research, employees, and sustainability.
The building was designed to be LEED Silver, a large task for an energy intensive biotech HVAC, plumbing, and electrical systems. Every space in the building was provided with access to natural light and special design considerations were taken to reclaim the patio; successfully reconnecting nature to the building interior.
The new design allowed SGI to fit the same number of persons and science into 80% of the space.
