Located within the La Jolla Cove area in the City of San Diego, adjacent to the beautiful coastline and cliffs, the EB Scripps Park Comfort Station stands as a distinguished architectural statement for the area yet harmonizes seamlessly with its immediate surroundings. Completed in 2022, the facility replaces its predecessor which was originally built in 1967. Initiated by a dedicated community group, the project aimed to enhance public amenities and safety standards.

One of the main objectives for the new building was to plan it out to prioritize the safety and well-being of a community that benefits from and is characterized by its outdoor lifestyle. The design caters to a variety of outdoor activities while also supporting inclusivity and equality through its programming. The building’s siting resulted in positioning outdoor showers to face beach access, while the park side is fronted with an information kiosk, storage space, and power to support events such as concerts and community gatherings.

Another objective was to establish the structure as a landmark for the area that would stimulate the connectivity of the park and beach community. The signature floating roof, positioned and shaped to reminisce wings in flight, incorporates translucent panels and open lattice works, emphasizing an airy environment and connectivity to the elements, allowing natural airflow, ventilation, and light to access the interiors. The bold concrete walls ground the building and are textured and color-blended to represent the coastal habitat and natural bluffs in the nearby coastlines.
