From improper drainage to hard-to-clean surfaces, the San Diego Humane Society (SDHS) Adoption Center needed a renovation. SDHS and COAR Design Group worked collaboratively to develop a new design that maximizes the quality of animal habitats, enhances guest experiences, and supports staff efficiency.
As one of the country’s largest humane societies, SDHS is at the forefront of shelter design and is committed to continuously improving their facilities and operations. The Adoptions Center remodel included innovative housing for dogs, cats, and small animals, as well as updated support spaces. The housing areas are flexible to accommodate SDHS’s evolving needs.
The staggered “saw-tooth” kennel design for the dog habitats allows for a calmer environment in which each dog has its own space to rest and interact with potential adopters.
Improved drainage and 100% outside air units curb the spread of disease and the travel of acoustics between habitats, creating a safer and more recuperative environment.
The previously under-utilized outdoor area became a first of its kind “cat-tio,” providing outside space for cats.
The new Adoptions Center aims to set a standard for getting animals into their new homes as quickly as possible while maximizing quality of life during their stay.
Wow, for a Humane Society I have to say it’s impressive. I want to go there!!
Such a beautiful space, well utilized, and works with the community well! You can tell a lot of thought went into the design.
