RMD Group’s flagship Rustic Root location opened in San Diego’s Gaslamp in 2015, and 10 years later, Rustic Root Solana Beach serves as the group’s first concept outside of the city’s downtown district. An instant neighborhood hit, Rustic Root Solana Beach brings a new level of playful interior design, curb appeal and culinary energy to North County. Located on the mixed-use Sandbox development, the 3,273 square-foot restaurant (including a 923 square-foot patio) was designed by Davis Ink and architect Arch5 Design Studio. The design reflects the restaurant’s culinary sensibilities: classics rooted in tradition, with spirited flair and elevated touches. Kitschy elements like gold-painted faux animal heads, velvet tufted diner booths, and plaid walls create a perfectly over-the-top, nostalgic atmosphere. Interior highlights include a custom plate art installation by Rustic Root employees Justin Huelbig and Francesca Semproni. The restaurant utilized 99% of the wood sourced from the Hotel Del Coronado’s recent renovation, repurposing precious pieces of San Diego history. Balancing whimsy and refinement, the design flows seamlessly from the spacious indoor-outdoor patio into the main dining room, centered around an elegant black-marble-top bar with emerald green accents and floral tile backsplashes, through to an intimate rear private dining space.
