Orchid The design of this two-story lifeguard headquarters is carefully crafted to enhance lifeguard operations, provide public accommodations and withstand its coastal environment. Its sweeping second floor walls and roof lines recall rescue boats and ocean waves while also allowing ample daylight to enter the facility. Operationally, the building acts as a “tool box” for the lifeguards, with every space serving multiple functions and designed to maximize wasted space. Keeping the station footprint to a minimum resulted in more beach area left for public use.
A 7 1/2 foot-by-15-foot mural entitled “The Pacific Playground” — which hundreds of community members helped put together — was installed on a wall near the entrance by Surfing Madonna Oceans Project.
Architectural forms take their cues from natural elements found on the site. The completion of the Marine Safety Center alongside the new concessions and restrooms designed by SDA creates a campus feel, giving Moonlight Beach a cohesive identity. The project was built with extreme attention to detail to be sure that the state-of-the-art facility can last another 50 years or longer. The Encinitas Marine Safety Center is a wonderful facility for Encinitas Lifeguards and for the community to enjoy.
