When HED embarked on their search for a new location for their San Diego offices, the former home of the San Diego Union Tribune newspaper company quickly emerged as the frontrunner. Ampersand, exuding character, offered all the features a fully integrated architectural firm could desire: brick and concrete, lofty ceilings, expansive windows, and outdoor decks, making it an ideal setting for HED San Diego’s future headquarters.
HED harmonized the building’s external architecture and structural elements with a soothing interior palette inspired by the region, featuring hues of sand, clay, and natural plywood complemented by accents in sea foam green and sky-blue. Leveraging the local climate, the design seamlessly integrates spaces like the cafe, dining area, and presentation rooms with the terrace through a folding glass wall, blurring the boundary between indoor and outdoor activities. Biophilic elements further enhance the connection to nature both on the terrace and within the workspace.
The office layout includes a spacious, versatile gathering area designed for impromptu design sessions, community events, and casual dining and relaxation. Throughout the space, there are meeting rooms and focused work areas of varying sizes to accommodate different types of activities. Individual workstations are designed as “free address,” empowering teams to choose their workspace freely each day.
