Bread & Salt is a community arts building located in the barrio, just south of downtown San Diego. In the 1960’s the construction of the Interstate 5 freeway cut this community in two. At that time our building had been a bakery for 66 years. In 2010 we purchased the facility after it had sat abandoned for 6 years. Since then, we have, piece by small piece, been assembling good people and good projects to not only resurrect a former community anchor, but to create a place of art and experimentation that the entire city might benefit from. In addition to our strong local connections such as the Chicano Park Steering Committee, the Lowrider Clubs of San Diego, we are a hub of art, experimental music, events of all kinds, spaces for craftspeople, entrepreneurs and just about anyone with a dream and some time. Bread & Salt believes in the mantra of Roots, Deeds and Feats. Remember where you come from. Work steadily at your passion. And attempt the improbable from time to time.
Our touch on the building is as light as can be made while still creating a space that energizes experimentation. We love the found, the unexpected and the underdog.

Added: Within the past three years we have completed our main buildout and solidified our core tenant group. We hit a certain sustainable level 24 months ago.
