What was a unused leftover parcel of land now sits a fitting off campus companion to UC San Diego. 20 years in the making this gem of a design takes into consideration it’s surroundings and respects both the neighbors, the buildings users (the students of UCSD) and the greater community around it. The Hillel center takes on a old would feel with a very modern aesthetic. It’s three buildings of irregular shapes form a central courtyard insulated from the bustling commotion of traffic and gives the Jewsih students, and students of any other faith, of UCSD a place to meet, socialize, or have a meal that is safe, elevating, and beautiful. An Artfully crafted mix of materials, including Jerusalem stone cladding, mixed with a palette of native coastal plants helps to ground this project and anchor it to it’s context. With an eye to offsetting the electrical usage of the center the parking area has what could be the most elegant solar carports in all San Diego. These canopies were not an afterthought but a critical part of the overall design.
