About Point Loma

Situated on a peninsula between San Diego Bay and the Pacific Ocean, Point Loma is a community with many personalities. Strong ties to the military are plainly evident, with the Marine Corps Recruit Depot and the former Naval Training Center at its northern border, and Fort Rosecrans, Cabrillo National Monument and Naval Base Point Loma at the south. The community has a noteworthy nautical heritage as the home of America’s Cup Harbor, historical significance as the site of Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo’s famous landing in 1542, and is the nucleus of a close-knit Portuguese community.

Miller Hull’s San Diego studio returned to The Wharf at Point Loma Marina in 2018, a waterfront project the firm originally designed in 2009 to balance working and public spaces. Drawing from our Seattle studio’s success, we incorporated six Living Building Challenge Petals, including Net Zero Energy, with a rooftop solar array and battery backup. Prioritizing sustainability, health, and comfort, the space featured abundant daylight, fresh air, and non-toxic materials. With stunning views of San Diego Bay, the studio achieved Petal certification in May 2020, reflecting our commitment to regenerative design. It remains a vibrant, healthy, and inspiring workspace that embodies our values today.

The goal has been to demonstrate the beauty and diversity of the native plants that once dominated the area.

Bali Hai Restaurant
RESTAURANT
2230 Shelter Island Dr, San Diego, CA 92106
Guided Tour: SAT 11:30am
Before it was "Bali Hai" in was "The Hut". In 1952, Restauranteur Arthur "Art" Gregg Wellington LaShelle, received approval from the San Diego Harbor Department to build one of his tiki restaurants on the newly developed Polynesian-themed Shelter Island. The circular Tahitian "hut-shaped" building was designed by architect Robert Benedict Brout with Raymond C. Frazier and help from Boyle Engineering. LaShelle's corporation reportedly spent over $200,000 building the new restaurant. "Christian's Hut" soon became simply "The Hut". Soon after, Lashelle's corporation filed for bankruptcy protection. A Los Angeles investor William Kirk, on the advice of his accountant Tom F. Ham Jr., bought controlling interest. In 1954, "The Hut" was formally reopened as the "Bali Hai", with new management (Tom Ham) and some upgrades in both the dining room and kitchen. Now, 70 years later and over 3 million Mai Tai's served, Tom Ham's family continues to successfully operate the Bali Hai Restaurant, which remains one of the largest, oldest and most famous original tiki temples.
