A bold, blushing exterior featuring graceful curves, intricate tile work and delicate décor—Nakhshab Development & Design’s latest mixed-use property combines elements of retro glam (think French art deco) and tropical modernism (a la the calming pinks and greens of the Beverly Hills Hotel). Replacing a run-down one-story strip mall, Nakhshab introduced an eight-story showstopper to infuse Mission Hills with fresh, vibrant architecture and exciting new hospitality concepts.

RESTAURANT

Self-guided Tour: SUN 10am-1pm
The Fort, designed by Jonathan Segal FAIA in San Diego’s Mission Hills, integrates a restored 1920s Art Deco Ford Dealership with a modern eight-story mixed-use apartment complex. Collaborating with the community and preservation groups, the project recreated the dealership as a standalone focal point rather than just preserving its façade. The building consists of three distinct elements: the historic dealership, a two-story horizontally screened structure, and a vertical finned tower. It includes 23 apartments—three designated for very low-income housing—six live-work studios, and a restaurant. Architectural details, such as screened panels and fins, pay homage to the site’s automotive history.

A Streetcar Through Mission Hills
Join us for “A Streetcar Through Mission Hills,” a guided walking tour along a former streetcar line in the historic Mission Hills neighborhood. This 60–90-minute tour will be led by Barry Hager, co-founder of Mission Hills Heritage, a community-based nonprofit focused on historic preservation. The tour will explore the streetcar’s route through Mission Hills and the beautiful homes built along it. Learn about Kate Sessions’ nursery, which was adjacent to the rails, the development spurred by the streetcar, and the builders and early residents who shaped the area. View homes in various architectural styles built by some of San Diego’s leading builders of the time, including Nathan Rigdon, Morris B. Irvin, Alexander Schrieber, and Martin V. Melhorn, along with a home designed by the renowned early 20th-century architect Richard Requa. We will gather at Salon Sloane, 1605 W. Lewis Street—a historic Mission Revival-style building in the West Lewis business district of Mission Hills, constructed in 1911 as part of the Rigdon Block.
