About Downtown
The center of our city’s civic life, arts and cultural attractions, and a hub of economic activity, Downtown is a place to work and play hard. The Embarcadero connects the area to the waterfront, providing green spaces where the public enjoys the natural beauty of the bay. The revitalization of many historic buildings has created new residential, retail and commercial spaces.

The Davis–Horton House is the oldest building in Downtown San Diego, built in 1850. Home to the founding fathers of modern San Diego, William Heath Davis and Alonzo Horton, this pre–fabricated saltbox house was originally shipped all the way from Portland, Maine. After it was relocated to its current site in 1981, restoration began, and electricity was installed for the first time. Today, the museum showcases San Diego’s early history.
