Ripple Effect is a community-based partnership between The City of National City, the Sweetwater Authority water utility, A Reason To Survive (ARTS) and the National City-based Design and Fabrication team at Artist and Exile.

The project is comprised of 5 student-intern designed and fabricated art pieces placed throughout El Toyon Park in National City, each with an information plaque and QR code that links to Water Conservation Resources provided by the Sweetwater Authority.

A laser cut multi-layered acrylic sign – generated from original student-intern artwork – titles the project and expands the project’s presence along E 4th Street.

The final portion of the project is the beautification of the Spigot housing and the surrounding area. Since 1977 the Sweetwater Authority and National City have worked together to provide this FREE water source – directly drawn from a nearby well and tested for quality weekly – to anyone and everyone in the community.

Colorful posts capped with translucent acrylic ripple canopies and solar powered LED lights define the space around the spigot housing and create a sense of belonging for users. Sidewalk murals – also generated from original student-intern artwork – add playfulness and life to this once seemingly abandoned community resource.
