The Children’s Park renovation has revitalized a once-neglected downtown space along the Martin Luther King Jr. Promenade. Originally designed for convention center overflow, it now serves a growing residential population.
The redesign respects Peter Walker’s initial vision while adding diverse amenities based on resident input. Despite its compact size, the park now features a playground, dog area, lawn, exercise zone, retail and storage facilities, restrooms, and maintenance spaces. Key original elements have been preserved and enhanced, including the pool area, main lawn, and sculptural benches. A new boardwalk over the pool creates an engaging experience with existing sculptures and water features.
The park’s new building includes essential functions and a community engagement area with a canopy and retail space. A standout feature is the ‘phototropic’ wood canopy, that aligns with the sun’s movement.
This revitalized space now serves as a dynamic centerpiece for downtown San Diego, exemplifying successful urban renewal that fosters community interaction and enjoyment.
