Design + Community: Southeastern San Diego
BARRIO LOGAN | CHULA VISTA | CITY HEIGHTS | LA MESA | NATIONAL CITY | SAN MARCOS | SOUTHEASTERN SAN DIEGO
In Southeastern San Diego, there’s a grassroots energy that pulses throughout the community. Southeastern is among the oldest communities in San Diego. Many of the area’s streets and buildings reflect a rich cultural, architectural and demographic history. Home to a diverse mix of residents, the neighborhood provides unique opportunities for at-risk youth, including WriterzBlok, the first legal graffiti park in the nation. There’s also Girls Take Flight, a one-of-a-kind program that teaches teen girls to build and fly drones, and Access Youth Academy, a college prep program that trains students to become competitive squash players.
Access Youth Academy is under construction, and OH! San Diego 2021 will put it on display during a virtual hard hat tour highlighting how it’s taking shape. You’ll also have a chance to visit Project New Village, a community garden that is the centerpiece of the Good Food District being developed in Southeastern San Diego.

While SDAF likes to lose itself in the throes of all things design, this week we look at one aspect of it we haven’t explored much recently — engineering. In a Q&A with civil engineer Edgar Camerino, Woodbury School of Architecture fifth year student Kayleigh Cornejo explores what makes an engineer tick, what’s rewarding about the work, and how, through its many projects there, RICK Engineering is helping to shape Southeastern San Diego.
