SUMMARY:Hot Properties ~ Jacobs Music Center
DESCRIPTION:Originally built in 1929\, the Fox Theatre became home to the San Diego Symphony in 1984 and was renamed the Joan and Irwin Jacobs Music Center in 2013. The nearly century-old hall has been transformed into a modern performance venue while preserving its historic character.\nLed by HGA with Akustiks and Schuler Shook\, the $125 million renovation reimagines the Jacobs Music Center as a world-class concert hall\, enhancing both acoustics and audience experience while honoring its legacy as the former Fox Theatre. The venue reopened with an inaugural concert on September 28\, 2024.\nSpanning 70\,545 square feet\, the project includes upgraded performance\, backstage\, and public spaces. The redesigned audience chamber now seats 1\,831\, with the addition of a choral terrace that supports large-scale performances or additional seating.\nKey improvements include a comprehensive acoustic overhaul\, reconfigured stage and seating\, new finishes\, advanced production technology\, expanded musician support spaces\, and upgraded building systems. Historic features were carefully preserved throughout.

SUMMARY:SDAF Design Film Series ~ Architecton
DESCRIPTION:An extraordinary journey through the material that makes up our habitat: concrete\, and its ancestor\, stone. Victor Kossakovsky raises a fundamental question: how do we inhabit the world of tomorrow? \nFrom filmmaker Victor Kossakovsky (Gunda\, Aquarela) comes an epic\, intimate\, and poetic meditation on architecture and how the design and construction of buildings from the ancient past reveal our destruction — and offer hope for survival and a way forward. Centering on a landscape project by the Italian architect Michele De Lucchi\, Kossakovsky uses the perfect circle of stones in De Lucchi’s garden to reflect on the rise and fall of civilizations\, capturing breathtaking imagery from the temple ruins of Baalbek in Lebanon\, dating back to AD 60\, to the recent destruction of cities in Turkey following a 7.8 magnitude earthquake in early 2023. Rocks and stone connect the disparate societies\, from ghostly monoliths stuck in the earth to tragic heaps of concrete rubble waiting to be hauled off and repurposed.

SUMMARY:Hot Properties ~ Lyceum Theatre
DESCRIPTION:The Lyceum itself stands as a beacon of what dedicated investment in San Diego’s cultural infrastructure can achieve. It demonstrates how a revitalized theatre can enrich lives\, strengthen bonds\, and elevate San Diego’s artistic landscape. This extensive remodel involved wholescale physical and technology upgrades to address past operational and audience experience challenges\, such as poor sight lines\, lack of accessibility\, and production inefficiencies. Back-of-house improvements were transformative and included modernized dressing rooms\, a theatrical lighting system upgraded to solid-state LED\, upgraded projection and video systems\, re-engineered theatrical rigging\, new drapery sets\, and a new tension grid. Public improvements greatly enhance the theatre-goer experience with a reshaped seating bowl for improved sight-lines\, new seating\, comprehensive finish upgrades\, and enhanced circulation and safety.

SUMMARY:Taste of Design ~ Bacari
DESCRIPTION:Bacari has officially arrived in North Park\, taking over the former Urban Solace space at 30th Street and University Avenue. The New Orleans–style setting now features two striking bars\, thoughtfully designed seating areas\, Mediterranean-inspired small plates\, craft cocktails\, and refreshing mocktails—all delivered in an unbeatable atmosphere. \nBacari (BAH-kah-ree\, a Venetian word for “wine bar”) is a Mediterranean small plates restaurant serving a shareable\, made-from-scratch menu alongside an extensive rotating selection of thoughtfully prepared cocktails\, wine\, and beer. Founded in Los Angeles in 2008 and operated by brothers Robert and Danny Kronfli\, alongside Executive Chef and Co-Owner Lior Hillel\, the restaurant concept draws inspiration from ancient Venetian wine bars\, known as bacari\, which served wine accompanied by shareable small plates\, or “cicchetti\,” and functioned as the social hearts of local neighborhoods. \nBacari is known for its authentic\, inviting\, guest-centric approach to hospitality and for curating each restaurant to reflect the unique character of the neighborhood in which it operates.

SUMMARY:SDAF Taste of Design ~ Dora Ristorante
DESCRIPTION:Dora Ristorante is the latest concept from Chef Accursio Lota and Corinne Goria\, the husband-and-wife duo behind Cori Pastificio Trattoria in North Park. Named for Chef Accursio’s grandmother\, Dora celebrates coastal Southern Italian cuisine through a contemporary lens\, featuring handmade pastas\, fresh seafood\, and bright Mediterranean ingredients rooted in seasonality. \nA nod to the Tony Award-winning La Jolla Playhouse just steps away\, the restaurant offers pre- and post-theatre dining experiences and specialty themed cocktails inspired by on-stage productions and the neighborhood’s creative spirit. \nA true family endeavor\, Dora reflects the couple’s shared love for culture\, performance\, and community as new residents of La Jolla. \nDesigned in collaboration with Bells + Whistles (Animae\, Campfire\, Jeune et Jolie) and built by CLTVT with Moniker Building Co. (The Lafayette Hotel)\, the space brings Southern Italian coastal life to La Jolla with sun-washed tones\, hand-cut tilework\, and a central bar overlooking the open kitchen. \nThe 3\,800-square-foot restaurant features 2\,600 square feet of dining space and a 1\,200-square-foot patio\, creating a seamless indoor-outdoor flow well suited to both leisurely evenings and timely pre-theatre dining for guests heading to the neighboring La Jolla Playhouse. \n
