Volunteer Opportunities with the SDAF
SDAF Film Series
The SDAF Film Series is off to a very successful start! Our debut on May 22 was fun and social, with a dramatic screening of "The Belly of An Architect", starring Brian Dennehy and introduced by San Diego's very own Michael Stepner. We think we can fill the "theater" more than four times a year, but we do need volunteers to make that happen! If you have an interest in film, we need your help. Perks include admission and all the free popcorm you can eat! Please contact Leslee at lschaffer@sdarchitecture.org, or 619.232.1385 to learn more about this funtastic program!
Orchids & Onions
Taking a critical and complimentary look at local architecture and design is a vital part of the SDAF's mission to "Inspire Excellence in Our Built Environment". After a successful start in '06, Orchids and Onions (O&O), San Diego’s premier awards program for the built environment, is officially rejuvenated, and a new website dedicated solely to Orchids & Onions is to be launched in June. With this new site O&O will be going all year long, with a new look, and a fresh vision. We need
volunteers to help monitor the nominations as they come in, organize them, take additional photos, find out additional information, etc. We also need participants for the awards event.
Are you interested in participating? If so, notify the SDAF at orchidsonions@sdarchitecture.org, and we'll let you know how you can contribute to this fun, enlightening and significant program!
Architectural Tours Program
The SDAF Architectural Tours Program is growing and encountering great success and wonderful word-of-mouth reviews. We are currently recruiting Docents to guide tours and share the eclectic architectural history of San Diego with locals, tourists and even design professionals. We're also looking for Tour Mentors to help us create tour routes and content for our extensive wish-list of tours and train docents, as well as scheduling and administrative support. Come aboard and be part of what is sure to become a San Diego mainstay. We'd love to hear your ideas for additional engaging and educational architectural tours as well. For more information write tours@sdarchitecture.org
SDAF Education Program
Want to introduce children to the wonderful world of design? Get involved in BEEP, the elementary school program hosted by the SDAF. BEEP (Built Environment Education Program) has a long history in San Diego and after several quiet years we're getting ready to make some noise. Creating a children's level understanding of and an appreciation for the built environment is what BEEP is all about. The program stimulates awareness, group interaction and technical exploration. Students learn to think analytically and use problem solving skills as they build and create. Today's kids are tomorrow's homeowners, environmentalists, CEO's and voters. As a BEEP volunteer, you'll make an impact on these kids now, helping them to become engaged and informed citizens of the future. We're looking for trainers, design professionals and teachers. Trainers train the design professionals, who venture into the schools and work with the teachers to incorporate architecture and design into their curriculum in a creative and entertaining way. BEEP is a fun and rewarding way to introduce kids to the importance of the built environment. Get involved today! Contact BEEP@sdarchitecture.org
