The 2011 Orchids & Onions Awards Ceremony & Silent Auction is on October 27, and tickets are available now! The jury will have completed their deliberations, the People (that's you) will have voted, and the only thing left is the culmination of the nomination, commenting and voting process:

Early Bird tickets are available now, and we have another spectacular event in the works, including inspired set design by Bells & Whistles, fabulous furniture from HoldIt Contemporary Home, beer by Stone Brewing Co. and wine from Leonesse Winery, mind-blowing Auction items (including a 26-person luxury suite at Petco Park for a 2012 Padre game, amazing art, restaurant, spa and hotel gift certificates and much, much more!), and about 450 awesome attendees to mingle with. Join the San Diego Architectural Foundation on November 4 when, with a whole lot of help from our friends - the Culy Warehouse downtown will be transformed into an enchanting Orchids & Onions wonderland!

Replete with yummy food and beverages, fab tunes, Silent Auction items from luxurious to functional (and lots of things in-between), and a room full of funtastic people...what better way to celebrate and contemplate our spaces? Let's come together and applaud the things that are being done oh-so-well, and address the things that, shall we say... could use some improvement.

The evening will highlight the 2010 O&O theme; Outlook: Opportunity!
and offer perspectives on ways in which we may
COLLABORATE, MOTIVATE, APPRECIATE & CELEBRATE!!

Assorted Happenings + Various Misgivings is an informative look into the making of 2010 Orchid nominee the Periscope Project, with video footage by Andrea Ngan. Artist Louis M Schmidt will feature work from his "No One Gets Out Alive (Nobody Wins)" series. Music is provided by DJ Snake Hips, Steve Tuttle, Tristan Shone and Il-young Son, powered by the A&P Soundsystem. A pop-up will provide Project paraphernalia with custom shirts by Weve Clothing.

Join the Periscope Project for art, architecture, fellowship and community exchange takes part in the East Village "Open Spaces" Art Walk and shines a flashlight on the neighborhood to reveal a glimpse of greater things to come!

It was a big weekend for celebration in San Diego - from NewSchool (see previous post) to the Neurosciences Institute for AIA San Diego's 2010 Design Awards Ceremony.

Hearty congratulations to SDAF member Mike Burnett for being named AIASD's Young Architect of the Year. In addition, FoundationForForm Architecture & Planning, Burnett's firm with partner Craig Abenilla, received one of the evening's three Divine Detail awards for MXD830, also a 2009 Orchid (for Architecture) and Community Vision Award winner.

First Lady Michelle Obama tours New Roots Community Garden yesterday, winner of a Special Jury Mention Orchid in 2009:
  
"Located on a small 2.5 acre lot in City Heights, a grass roots effort has finally taken hold to create San Diego’s first community farm. One juror noted “Kudos to the groups’ collective perseverance in spending three years and over $50K in City of San Diego required permits and processing to get this project out of the ground”."
     
We're thrilled to see this beautiful community effort get the national recognition it so richly deserves!
