Congratulations to NewSchool Grads, Faculty and Friends

More than 100 students graduated from NewSchool of Architecture and Design (NSAD) today, the largest class in its 30-year history. Commencement exercises were held this morning at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies in La Jolla.

Kicking the ceremony off was a Friday night open house at the school, showcasing the work of graduating seniors and master’s degree candidates.

Having attended, we couldn't agree more with Roger Showley's assessment that "...this year’s graduating seniors and master’s degree candidates at the NewSchool of Architecture and Design downtown show they can compete with the best of the seasoned professionals." For complete coverage, read "Rethinking San Diego's urban landscape", Roger's article in the Union-Tribune.

This morning's commencement speaker was SDAF member Gilbert Cooke, AIA, former NSAD president and retiring dean, who received an honorary Master of Architecture degree. Other special presentations included the Manuel and Laura Rosen Professional Service Award awarded to San Diego architect and previous, long-time SDAF board member Jack Carpenter, FAIA, and the Richard Welsh Distinguished Service Award, named for the school’s founder, being awarded to Roger Showley, author, historian and senior writer for the San Diego Union-Tribune and another great friend of the SDAF.

A hearty congratulations to all, from all of us at the San Diego Architectural Foundation!
